The capacity of GRIN to deconstruct cross-sector innovations in order to evolve new railway applications is unique. Deconstruction enables the creation of new cross-technology solutions and a railway specific analysis reveals the potential to evolve novel combined technology solutions and processes. The operational risks and railway challenges addressed by each new innovation are identified and, where additional research is required, feedback into the host industry will be provided to encourage further research and the creation of new business opportunities.

Construction of the Global Railway Innovation Network will be completed on 23 July 2007. Until this time, a temporary operational network and a simplified gateway layout has been put in place.
