Today London Underground is a major business, with over 3 million passenger journeys a day, some 500 peak trains, 253 stations owned (275 served), over 12,000 staff and vast engineering assets.
The Metronet Rail Group, whose shareholders are five world-class companies, is responsible for upgrading, replacing and maintaining two-thirds of London Underground's infrastructure – its trains, stations, signalling, track, tunnels and bridges - under a 30 - year Public Private Partnership contract which came into operation in April 2003.
